QUESTION: Has anyone ever confronted ya with a remark that -- well, you've heard it so often that you'd just wish it would go away? You know: Like "Sixties rock doesn't make an impact anymore," "Is Lady Gaga really a woman?" or "Your fly's unzipped" or something?
(*Answers to the last two questions: "Yes, definitely!" and "Thanks for noticing. I've had no fall-out from it, though ..")
But about that first remark -- the one about "Sixties rock" and "impact":
Who says this music of ours doesn't have impact?? I mean, even the Supreme Cat used a famous line from ... (ummm, wait. That's supposed to read "Supreme Court". Sorry ...) from one of Dylan's biggest hits to drive home a point about payphone (do they still make those?) carriers and long-distance operators. Matter of fact, he used my favorite Dylan line: "When ya ain't got nothin' ya got nothin' to lose!" (*lyric from Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan).
Now, it isn't the first time the SLE (Supreme Legal Eagles) of government have used his lyrics. In fact, they've used ... let's seeee here:
26 of Dylan's, 12 of Paul Simon's, five of Springsteen's, four by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, three of Lennon and/or McCartney, two from the Grateful Dead and one by Joni Mitchell. Notice they didn't use any new or super old stuff: They referred to Sixties' hits, yardbirds! It's, what? It's nearly fifty years later, and it's still makin' an impact??
Impressive, huh? Then, 'nuff said!!
But there's been other court action involving rockers over the past few days:The estate of the late Rick Nelson filed lawsuits for "breach of contract" and something called "unjust enrichment" against his label, Capitol Records this past Monday. It claims the label has screwed up the royalties from his recordings and hasn't completely paid them. They are seeking restitution and unspecified damages.
Meanwhile, David Cassidy filed suit yesterday against Screen Gems and Sony Pictures for breach of contract, claiming he's owed 15% of merchandising from "The Danny Bonaduce ... er, The Partridge Family" TV show, 7.5% of the net proceeds of the show's royalties plus 5% of spinoffs. David says he only received $5,000. He is asking for compensation and damages in the millions of dollars.
Okay ... that's gonna wrap it up for this session, but stay tuned ... there's more coming up in less than 24, so:
see ya on the flip side ...
