And The Nominees Are ...
Well, they've announced the nominees for the Songwriters' Hall of Fame (they let the "cat out of the bag" this past Friday. Mine's still trying to get out, btw ...) -- which is why I've written this particular post (or couldn't you tell??)
Now, as you know, the HoF noms are broken down into two separate groups (oh ... don't worry: it's a paper grocery bag he got into, that's all ...), the performers and non-performers (also known as "singers" and "writers" or, in the everyday world here in the U.S., "the working class" and "Congressmen"):
Performing Songwriters include:
Dion DiMucci
Gordon Lightfoot
Pete Townshend of The Who (hmph ... as if we didn't know ...)
Bob Seger
Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)
Steve Miller
Lou Reed
Debbie Harry of Blondie (gee ... THAT Debbie Harry?? lol We knew already ...>
Elvis Costello.
The Non-Performing Nominees are:
Tony Hatch (Petula Clark's "Downtown")
Paul Vance & Lee Pockriss (Perry Como's "Catch A Falling Star")
P.F. Sloan and Steve Barry (Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction")
Artie Resnick and Kenny Young (The Drifters' "Under The Boardwalk")
Jerry Fuller (Rick Nelson's "Travelin' Man")
Chips Moman (B.J. Thomas' "Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song")
Don Covay (Aretha Franklin's "Chain Of Fools")
Graham Gouldman (The Hollies' "Bus Stop")
Sandy Lizner & Denny Randell (The Four Seasons' "Working My Way Back To You")
Tony Macauley (The Foundations' "Build Me Up Buttercup")
Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf's "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad")
Don Schlitz (Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler").
The winners will be inducted on 14 June in New York. (IMHO, they still need to include one of the two best single songwriters ever to come out of the UK [the other's a dude everybody calls Macca. Just got married, y'know ...]. Performer, composer, arranger, rock historian, member of the British rock scene during the Invasion, the legendary Ron Ryan should be inducted as well!)
And James Brown was posthumously inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame Saturday night (October 15) in Atlanta. At one time, Mr. Brown owned radio stations in Albany and Atlanta. Meanwhile, Bob Newhart will be inducted into the Illinois Broadcasters Hall of Fame this coming Friday in Chicago.
To round out the props, one that's been a long time coming: Lyricist Hal David (the "other" name you see in record credits to Bacharach-David) finally received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this past Friday.
Congrats to all nomininees ...
AS I SEE IT ... Why, oh why is it that, just because a guy's single and on Facebook®, they think he's out there to flirt? In fact, I was asked that by one of my FB folks this past week. It was something like: Don't you ever flirt?
Naaah ... Besides, where I come from, a "flirt" is the sound a teeeeny little doggie makes when it farts!
So, no, I don't "fliwaitaminnit ...
that's gonna sound sooooo wrong if I continue ..
And (you guys with small pooches can relate to this:) why is it that a little bitty doggie only nibbles food with his tiny, delicate mouth -- but has the digestive system of a cow??
Anyway ... back to the question: No, I don't show off in that manner. There are too many other ways to make a fool of myself ... and I'm just beginning to enjoy them.
ONE MORE THING: If you're having trouble getting to sleep at night, just glare at this:
There ... feeling sleepy yet?
Okay, that's it for now, troops! Until tomorrow ... see ya on the flip side!
